History

Did you know that tennis has been played in Gregson Park since 1898?

Hamilton Park Tennis Club is the last remaining tennis club in Gregson Park which, at one time, was home to three tennis clubs.

The current club pavilion of Hamilton Park Tennis Club was officially opened in 1959 by the then president of Newcastle Tennis, Mr J Wright.

Flexibility with court hire is now taken for granted but it wasn't until 1975 that the club allowed its courts to be hired on Sunday mornings.

In 1995 new synthetic grass surfaces were laid on both courts. Those courts and the clubhouse were affected by flooding from the Pasha Bulker storm in 2007 with both courts being subsequently resurfaced in 2009.

Gregson Park Draft Masterplan

Does a tennis club need a clubhouse?

Dear Tennis Players,

If you are reading this, you are likely to have enjoyed playing tennis at the courts in beautiful Gregson Park.

Tennis has been played in Gregson Park since 1898 and Hamilton Park Tennis Club (HPTC) is the sole surviving club of the three clubs that once operated in the park.

Maintenance of the club's tennis courts, including their resurfacing, is the responsibility of HPTC. The club also manages the hire of the courts by the community.

The Gregson Park Draft Masterplan has recently been released by Newcastle City Council. Amongst its many good ideas is the alarming idea of demolishing the clubhouse of Hamilton Park Tennis Club and replacing it with only a shade shelter. HPTC, the club that operates and maintains the courts on behalf of members and the community, believe this is unacceptable. Not having a clubhouse would seriously impact our ability to maintain the courts and provide a suitable environment for players and particularly children. We believe that losing the clubhouse is also a genuine threat to our existence in the long term. We agree that the clubhouse should be repaired or replaced but can't condone the idea of having no clubhouse at all. No clubhouse would mean no meeting place, no storage, no kitchen, no toilet and no bookswap! And that's just to start!

We are asking for your help.

If you believe like we do, that a tennis club needs a clubhouse, we ask you to speak up. We have some suggestions on how you can help:

1. Send an SMS or email to the elected Ward 2 councillors of Newcastle City Council and ask for their support (newcastle.nsw.gov.au/council/about-council/councillors/ward-2-councillors)

2. Send an email to mail@ncc.nsw.gov.au requesting that the Hamilton Park Tennis Club clubhouse be retained, repaired or rebuilt but not just demolished

3. Submit a response to the Gregson Park Draft masterplan via
(newcastle.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say/projects/gregson-park-masterplan)
Submissions must be made by 4pm Wednesday 6 October 2021

4. Let us know that we can add your name to a petition should we choose to submit one

5. SMS the club on 0468 472 330 and express your support of the club.

6. Continue to play tennis at the HPTC courts and demonstrate just how important the courts are to the community.

Thank you very much for your attention and support and best wishes to you all during this lockdown.

Yours in tennis
HPTC
